Friday afternoon summing up comes, before aJudge of the Superior Court specially selectedfor interest and fitness to deal with children,a written history of the boy is furnished theCourt, and the Probation Officer stands readyto represent him. The question in the mind of the Court is notwhat punishment to give the boy who commitsthis offense, but Wliat treatment will helpthe boy to true manhood ? About one-half the boys are dismissed. Theseare usually boys of good standing, from fairhomes, who have expressed their young energyin ways which offend, jumping on cars andtrains, throwing rocks wildly, playing handballin the street or ignoring the 8 oclock ordinance. Where there is a conflict of evidence, or whensome new avenue of investigation turns up thatwould much enlighten the situation, the caseis held over for one, two or three weeks, the boyreturning to his home or remaining in deten-tion, to report again in court. SCENE IN THE JDVENILK COURT, Little childrt-n like those in the jury box used to be s.-nt to the County Jail. the Juvenile Court charged with trying to en-tice Jim, a boy of twelve, to go railroadingwith him to St. Louis. It came out that thelarger boy was from Milwaukee; had been hit-ting the grit off and on for two years; hadpicked up this runaway San Francisco young-ster on the road in Montana, and had broughthim home. Ardie, the big boy, hung around the city,stealing secret interviews with little Jim untilhe excited the suspicions of Jims father, whohad him arrested. When interviewed by theProbation Officer, he displayed such blind furyat his detention that no headway was possible.The only people in this city who knew him werethe family and neighbors of Jim, who hadeverything bad to say.
