Summary[edit]

Description

Menzies catchfly, Silene menziesii, California, White Mountains, Cottonwood Basin, Poison Creek, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 2999 m (9840 ft).

Menzies catchfly is common and widespread in western North America from Alaska to Manitoba south to California and New Mexico. Here in the White Mountains it is only found in the filtered light of riparian forests and woodlands, where the "flies" it catches with its sticky foliage tend to be the airborne seeds of willows. I rarely see plants that are not covered with willow fluff.

Also visible in this image are stems of scouring rushes (Equisetum).
