Summary

[edit]
Description

Sir Murray Halberg, gold medal-winning athlete and patron of both athletics and children with disabilities, was born on 7 July 1933. Born in Eketahuna, Halberg later moved to Auckland, where he initially played rugby. However a severe injury during a game damaged his left arm, so the next year he took up running. In 1951 he met Arthur Lydiard, who became his coach, and three years later Halberg won his first national title at a senior level.

Although Halberg won gold medals at both the 1958 and 1962 Commonwealth Games, he is best remembered for his inspiring effort to win gold at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. "Drawing inspiration from Peter Snell’s [earlier] triumph, Halberg completed a golden day for New Zealand by winning in 13 minutes 43.4 seconds" notes nzhistory.net.nz. "Running to a plan set by Lydiard, he burst ahead of the field with three laps to go and hung on bravely to the finish. A couple of strides after reaching the tape, he collapsed on the infield, completely spent. Australian distance champion Ron Clarke described it as ‘probably the most courageous run in Olympic history’".

This memorandum from Prime Minister Walter Nash to Halberg captures the pride in his performance. "It was the thrill of a lifetime to listen to your magnificent race" wrote Nash. "New Zealand acclaims your fitness, your grit and determination, your speed, and your perfect judgement, all of which were needed to win an Olympic gold medal." Other memos were written to Peter Snell and Harold Austad, manager of the New Zealand team.
