Español: Membrana mitocondrial externa en color beige. Membrana mitocondrial interna en azul. Las crestas mitocondriales forman un pliegue. En la punta de la cresta, con gran curvatura de la membrana, se localiza la ATP sintasa, formando dímeros (en rojo). Las proteínas de la cadena respiratoria (CTE, cadena transportadora de electrones mitocondrial) se localizan en los laterales de la cresta mitocondrial. Proteínas específicas (en verde) se localizan en la base o hendidura de la cresta, y contribuyen a organizar la cresta y a seleccionar los iones y moléculas que entran en o salen de la cresta.
IBM: ("Inner Boundary Membrane") región de la membrana interna que se dispone más o menos paralela a la membrana externa. Es diferente en estructura y función de la cresta mitocondrial. Basado en R.
