Melanie KurtIn Fidelio GERMAN PERFORMANCES ABOLISHED 393 that the decision was not of recent date nor had it been in-fluenced by the recent experience of the Boston SymphonyOrchestra at Providence. The directors, it was said, hadreached the conclusion that to continue the giving of Ger-man opera might hearten the people of Germany becauseof the exaggerations with which the story of the Germanperformances might be accompanied. Such a risk, howeverremote, the directors did not intend to take. Nothing wassaid about any German operas in particular, but the briefannouncement was made that when the repertory of theopening week should be announced the public might restassured that it would contain nothing that could causethe least offense to the most patriotic Americans. A fort-night later it became known that the general manager hadcanceled the contracts with Margarete Ober, Melanie Kurt,Johannes Sembach, Carl Braun, and Hermann Weil—allsingers engaged for the performance of German operas
