rise to a bud, but thedaughter medusa may be formed by anaggregation of such cells, and until theexact mode of formation of the earlystages of the daughter medusae is demon-strated we can not be certain whetherto regard the process as being one ofbudding or of germination. Braem,however, shows strong evidence, in sofar as it extends, to support the beliefthat we have here a germinal process.It this be the case it may be in somemeasure comparable to the formation ofcertain tumors in higher animals. Genus Scrippsia Torrey, 1909. Scrippsia, Torrey, 1909, Publications University ofCalifornia, Zool., vol. 6, p. 14. This jrenus resembles the closelyallied Polyorchis (see page 218), but isdistinguished by its gelatinous, gastricpeduncle and the absence of pinnatebranches on the radial-canals distal tothe gonads. The gonads are long andtubular as in Polyorchis, but are con-fined to the radial-canals over the 1G 3*7peduncle. The tvpe species is Scrippsia pacifica from the coast of California.

All of the tentacles are joined by peronial strands to the ring-canal. The tentaclebases of the last two cycles bear ocelli.
