The genus Eutimium was founded by Haeckel, 1879, for E. elephas of the GermanOcean, but this has marginal warts and should be called Eutima. GENERIC CHARACTERS. Eucopidae with 8 lithocysts, 2 in each quadrant, and with 4 or more tentacles. There areneither cirri nor -warts upon the bell-margin or upon the sides of the tentacles. The gonadsare developed upon the 4 radial-canals. There is a well-developed peduncle. In some speciesthere are 8 gonads, 2 upon each radial-canal; in others, however, there are but 4 gonads, oneupon each radial-canal.

Haeckel, 1879, restricts Eutimium to include only those forms with 4 tentacles whichhave 4 gonads, one on each radial-canal. He applies the generic name Octorchidiutn toembrace those forms which have 8 gonads, 2 on each radial-canal. Eutimium is very closely allied to Eutima, but lacks the warts or cirri which characterize the latter genus. 306 MEDUSAE OF THE WORLD. In 1897, Hartlaub founded the genus Eutonina to include Eucopidae with 8 adradiallithocysts, numerous tentacles, and neither marginal nor lateral cirri. 4 gonads on the 4 radial-canals. Stomach mounted upon a peduncle. This falls clearly under the amplified genusEutimium as defined above.
