Title
Medieval to post-medieval : Spindle Whorl
Description
English: A complete cast lead spindle whorl or weight of medieval to post-medieval date. The whorl is cylindrical in shape with an uneven serrated, or undulating, outer edge and central circular perforation. The base is flat and the top has nine raised pellets where the undulating side rise up.

The metal is a mid whitish-grey colour and is worn. The object is 26.5mm in diameter, 10.6mm thick and weighs 42.5g.

Spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are difficult to date precisely without a secure archaeological context. Most decorated examples however are late medieval to Post-medieval in date.
