Title
Medieval to Post Medieval: Complete double looped buckle frame with serrated outside edge
Description
English: A complete copper alloy double looped oval buckle frame with cusped or serrated edges, of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1450 to AD 1600).

Only the buckle frame is present, the strap plate and pin are missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The buckle frame consists of a double oval, with serrated outside edges. Six triangular notches have been removed from the external edge to create the serrated effect. The edges of the frame are bevelled. The reverse is flat and undecorated. Traces of iron corrosion products are present on the strap bar, which suggests that the pin may have been made from iron.

It measures 20.3 mm in length, 14.5 mm wide and 2.1 mm thick. It weighs 1.5 g.

The buckle frame is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina.

Several similar buckles frames have been recorded on the PAS database including: ESS-2C5D27; SUSS-EB41D4; WILT-40D587; HAMP-9E5467; HAMP-CA7733; LEIC-A292A3 and IOW-429E14. For similar examples, see Whitehead (2003: 60) nos. 352 - 357, in particular no 356.
