Medieval to Post-medieval : Purse bar
Description
English: A cast copper alloy Type A1 medieval purse bar.

This purse bar dates to the late 15th – early 16th century. The bar is circular in section and is hollow. One arm is broken so is missing its terminal, the other has a flattened, rounded knop at the terminal. The arms are undecorated.

The central block is square and has been decorated with incised lines on one side. The lines are parallel and form a reversed N shape. The other side of the block is undecorated. Traces of a niello are evident inside the lines. The iron rove is still in situ under the block, helping to hold the shank in place, the shank is rectangular in section and rises up from the central block. The loop is missing. A diagram of the Type A1 purse bar can be seen on the Medieval Catalogue (1967), p163, Fig: 50.
