Title |
Medieval or Post Medieval Cloth Seal (front and reverse) |
||
Description |
English: The object is a cloth seal. The object is made from lead or lead alloy. It is composed of a sub-circular disc which has an integral short ribbon leading to a second disc. The second disc has a central hole. The ribbon is folded in half so the discs over lay each other with the stud protruding through the hole of the second disc. The seal has then been squashed to become flat. In face has a ‘+’ visible but the rest of the design is unclear. The second face also has a design, but this is not clear. The surface of the seal has oxidised forming a light brown coloured surface. It measures 21.65mm long, 18.6mm wide and 4.07mm thick. It weighs 6.9g.
Cloth seal were in use between the 14th and 18th centuries (Egan, G. 1989 ‘Leaden Seals for Textiles – Some Archaeological Evidence Relating to Fabric and Trade’ Costume No. 23). |
