Title
Medieval buckle
Description
English: Medieval cast copper alloy, single-looped buckle frame. The frame is sub-oval in plan and rectangular in section. The outer edge is widened and gradually thickened in the middle, forming two rounded projecting sections with an incised pin rest in the centre to create a bilobed effect. The strap bar is recessed and offset, ovoid in section. The pin is also missing. The front of the frame is decorated with deep lateral incised lines across the width and diagonally incised lines across the bi-lobed area. the back is undecorated. The surface of the metal is grey-green.

The frame measures 23.7mm in length, 19.1mm in width and 3.1mm thick at the widest part, 2.3mm at the strap bar. It weighs 2.34 grams.

Whitehead (2003, pg. 24-25) illustrates similar buckle frames with moulded designs similar to this example; nos. 116, which is 'kidney' shaped rather than sub-oval and 122 which has a more ropework decorative style, which he dates from 1450-1550 AD.
