Title
Medieval biconical lead spindle
Description
English: Medieval biconical lead spindle whorl with cast decoration in relief. On one face ten radial lines and on the other with five saltires inconsistently alternating with radial lines (at one point there is a sequence of four lines, and at another three oblique lines. Diameter 26mm. Thickness 10mm. perforation diameter 9.5mm. Weighing 33.07g / 1.1665oz. Similar to an example from an early 16th century context at the Augustinian Friary, Leicester, complete with its wooden spindle (Mellor and Pierce 1981, 139-40, fig.51 no.71). It is possible that the object was residual, but it is unlikely to have been very ancient when deposited in the context, in view of its completeness.
