Title
Medieval bell
Description
English: A copper-alloy bell of probable Medieval date. It is formed from a sheet of copper-alloy rolled to produce a cone or 'tear-drop' shaped bell. At the top is an integrally cast suspension loop that is flat, oval in form and has a central circular aperture. The body of the bell flares towards the base and a long vertical seam is visible on the back face. The end of the bell is cut into four points that are bent inwards and separated by circular sound holes. Presumably these would have originally held in place the pea, which is no-longer visible due to corrosion and encrusted soil in the interior of the bell. It measures 39.30mm in length, 13.31mm in width, 13.06mm in thickness and 6.52g in weight (full of encrusted soil).

It is likely that this bell is of Medieval date. Several similar examples have been recorded through the PAS variously as bells (e.g. HAMP-435208, DUR-E44288) or harness pendants (e.g. WAW-8FA4F5 or HAMP-AD7DC7). They suggest a probable Medieval date for the current example, perhaps c.13th-14th centuries AD if not slightly later.
