Title
Medieval Buckle
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy single-looped rectangular buckle frame of abnormal form. Corroded remains of iron pin on narrowed round-sectioned pin bar. The outside round-sectioned edge is recessed from the ends of the sides, carries bluster mouldings similar those of double-looped frames such Whitehead 2003, no. 477 and Fingerlin 1971, Abb. 44. The former is dated to c.1450 - c.1600 and the latter to the mid 13th century. The present example quite closely resembles a single-looped frame found in London, that was also given a mid 13th-century date (Fingerlin 1971, 380, Kat. Nr. 183) and an example from Beachamwell (HER 23536, NMS-8DF5B6). Perhaps the 15th century is more likely. Length 20mm. Width 20mm.
