Title
Medieval Buckle
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy buckle with large double-looped frame, both loops trapezoidal, with stains from a lost iron pin on the bar. The concave sides and edges are decorated with pairs of oblique engraved grooves (or "open" chevrons), and the centres of both edges are decorated with three transverse notches. There is a rounded rabbet at each corner. Length 37mm. Width 64mm.

The corners of frames of this form and size are normally lobed (e.g. Whitehead 2003, no. 484) or plain (ibid. no. 483; Fingerlin 1971, 181, Abb. 297, dated to the first third of the 15th century). Rabbets frequently occur at the corners of double-looped frames with rectangular loops (e.g. Whitehead 2003, no. 482; Fingerlin 1971, 185, Abb. 301, dated to the second half of the 15th century). Whitehead 2003, nos. 482-4 are dated c.1450 - c.1600. Close parallels for this piece can be found in a frame from Haveringland, Norfolk (HER 7752, NMS-A80AF3) and in an incomplete and badly distorted example found in an unstratified context at Norwich Castle (Goodall, A. in Shepherd Popescu 2009, 602, fig. 8.36 SF5044.02). 15th-century .
