Title
Medieval : Bell
Description
English: An incomplete cast lead pilgrim bell of late medieval date. The bell is sub-conical with a rounded apex from which an integrally cast suspension loop projects. The base of the bell has been crushed shut and is broken and worn. The outer surface is decorated with four raised designs in the form of human faces though much of the detail is illegible due to damage and wear. A casting line is present on the sides of the bell and around the suspension loop.
The metal has a mid greyish-brown colour and is worn. The bell is 29.6mm long, 29.6mm wide, 14.8mm thick and weighs 18.8g.

A number of similar lead bells have been found in the East Riding, particularly focused around Kilham and Rudston. It is believed that such objects are connected with pilgrimage to and from Bridlington Priory, having a spiritual connection with the springs which ran through the area.
