Title
Medieval: Spoon
Description
English: An incomplete bowl of a lead spoon, dating from the 12th to 13th century. The remains of this leaf-shaped spoon bowl would have been dished. The front would have been undecorated and the reverse was decorated. The decoration on this bowl is of a cross with the shafts and arms bearing cross-hatching and a central rectangular panel with a diagonal (or 'St Andrew's') cross.

The cross in this circumstance is not thought to be of any religious significance, these spoons are said to be purely domestic. Brian Spencer commented on a similar spoon fragment found at Wansford, near Driffield, see Evans and Tomlinson, 'Excavations at 33-35 Eastgate, Beverley 1983-86' in Sheffield Excavation report No. 3, p143-7. Also see T. Brisbane in Biddle 1990, discussing no. 2625, a spoon with identical decoration to this example.
