e two massive open fireplaces, and on one sidea beautiful stationary bookcase of quaint design with leaded glassdoors, is the home of the ancient tomes, first editions of the med-ical fathers, musty and worm-eaten, but treasured by us, who areheirs of all the ages in the foremost files of time. In the centerof the room are two open racks for several hundred current Eng-lish journals. Opening from the main reading room is a conversation andsmoking room, also finished in Flemish oak, with upholsteringsof tapestry. Opening from the m.ain hall is a smaller readingroom devoted to current foreign periodicals. Between this andthe smoking room is located the Librarians office, connecting themain reading room with the stack room. It is so situated as tocommand a view of the main reading room, tlie stack room, theforeign journal room, and through a glass door in the latter, themain hallway.
