Title
Medieval shield-shaped stud, reverse.
Description
English: Copper alloy heraldic medieval harness or strap mount. The mount (or stud) is shield shaped with a central circular protruding stud on the reverse. The front of the mount is decorated with a simple design of three stripes of red enamel with two stripes of gold between ('Gules, two bars Or'). There is gilding on the sides of the stud. The arms belong to Jean (John) d'Harcourt, son and heir of Richard d'Harcourt (d.1242). Jean and wife Joan had contacts with the Manors of Hengham, Banham and Messingham (the latter is North Lincolnshire - relatively close to the findspot). Jean died in 1288 and left his son and heir (another Jean) who used the same arms but with a label azure.

The stud measures 23.42mm in length, 18.31mm in width, 5.3mm in thickness and weighs 6.68g.
