Title
Medieval finger ring: Ring with A G L A inscription
Description
English: A Medieval silver finger ring dating from c. AD 1200-1350. The ring is a single hoop with no join visible and with a rectangular cross section. Around the external circumference of the band is the inscription +A+G+L+A. This is an abbreviation for a popular charm against fever during the Middle Ages, and derives from the Hebrew 'Ata gibor le'olam Adonai' ('You are mightly forever, O Lord'). There are a number of artefacts with the same inscription recorded on the database including SUR-099F44 and DOR-B80705.
