The Committee of Defense,* in its formalannouncement of this event in the New York Columbian ofAugust 19, 1814, says : This work is the commencementof a chain of forts to be erected on Harlem Heights for thedefence of this city, under Gen. Swift, in the construction ofwhich the Committee of defence calculate upon the aid oftheir patriotic fellow citizens, as in the erection of those onLong Island. (34). The chain of fortifications, of which those at McGownsPass formed a part, was as follows : A redoubt on BensonsPoint, near 3d avenue and io6th street; those at Mc-Gowns Pass, to be described more in detail hereafter; thestone tower generally called blockhouse No. i, in the north-western part of Central Park, about fourteen yards south of109th street and seven yards west of 7th avenue; a stone towerbetween 113th and 114th streets and 9th and loth avenues ;a stone tower on the south side of 121st street about noyards east of lot
