Text Appearing Before Image:
WEBSTER IN 1851. AGE 6y. ORMSBY AND SILSBEE. From the original daguerreotype, owned by Mr. Walter U. Lawson. This daguerreotype is claimed to be the lasttaken of Mr. Webster. He sat for it at the request of Mr. Henry Williams, the print publisher of Boston, to enable Mr.Thomas Bayley Lawson to paint from it the whole-length figure to a repetition of the portrait he had painted of Websterfrom life in 1844. The painting thus produced was engraved, and the result was the plate made by WagStaffand Andrews. The daguerreotype is particularly interesting as a faithful rendering from life of Mr. Websters stature, no longer bornewith that dignity which so strongly impressed every one, but with the painful evidence of declining physical force. 628 LIFE PORTRAITS OF DANIEL WEBSTER.
Text Appearing After Image:
WEBSTER IN l852(?) AGE 70. BLACK. From the original daguerreotype owned by J. W. Black & Co., Boston. The history of this most interesting daguerreo-type is entirely unknown. From its present ownership, it was without doubt taken by the late J. W. Black, or by his one-time partner, John A. Whipple, pioneer and prominent daguerreotypists of Boston, having established themselves as earlyas 1840. Its expression and character plainly point to the closing days of Mr. Webster, and it is pathetic in its exact por-trayal of the declining statesman. It is these unique qualities that give it a place here when its date and authorship areundetermined. THE FIRST MRS. WEBSTER. 629
