Title
Maxwell Food Centre heritage signboard
Description

Signboard bearing text describing the heritage of Maxwell Food Centre in four languages: English, Mandarin Chinese, Malay, and Tamil

Text of signboard in English:

"Heritage of Our Hawker Centres Maxwell Food Centre

Maxwell Food Centre started out as Maxwell Road Market in 1929 with mainly fresh produce stalls. Cooked food stalls and eating facilities were added a year later. By the late 1930s, the market became well-known for the Teochew theatrical performances which were staged at the site during the annual Hungry Ghost Festival.

After World War II, the former Singapore Social Welfare Department started an initiative to establish a chain of "Family Restaurants" that sold cheap meals to the poor and the displaced. Maxwell Road Market was one of the selected sites and sold meals at 8 cents each. It also provided free meals for two to six year olds. In 1987, Maxwell Road Market was turned into a food centre and renamed Maxwell Food Centre. Street hawkers from China Square were rehoused here and it soon became famous for its traditional Chinese food stalls."
