Summary[edit]
DescriptionMatch of the Century - False Ending.jpeg |
English: Photograph from the Match of the Century, 16 February 1926. Suzanne Lenglen (left) and Helen Wills shake at hands at the net thinking the match has concluded after the last shot was called "out". A linesman (far right) holds his hand up to indicate the last shot was actually good and the match is not over.
The Engelmann book states on pp. 174–175 : "The most famous photograph of that instant shows the two women meeting at the net and a hand extended toward the photographer from the corner of the picture. Someone seemed to be signaling to the photographer to stop taking pictures. But why? Something was not right... One writer compared the false "out" call to the false armistice announcement on November 7, 1918 when millions of Americans reacted hysterically to a report that World War I had ended." |
