Text Appearing Before Image:
it her duty to marry Albert to fulfill apromise made to her dying mother, and begs him toleave the village. After Charlotte and Albert are married Wertherreturns and tells Charlotte that he still loves her. Sheadmits that he still possesses her affections, but en-treats him to spare her and go away forever. Wertherthen writes a message to Albert, telling him he hasresolved to go on a long journey, and asking him forhis brace of pistols. Charlotte, greatly alarmed atthis request, follows Werther. It is Christmas Eve,nearing midnight, and the snow, which is falling inwild gusts, almost blinds her as she staggers along. The scene changes to a tiny room, and reclining on achair in the lamplight is Werther, mortally wounded.Charlotte arrives too late, and he dies in her arms.Overcome with grief, she faints on the body of her lover, while in strange contrast to thisaffecting scene the pealing of bells and the joyous voices of little children singing Christmascarols are heard in the distance.
