John and Salome enter and Vitellius is surprised at the honor paid to the Prophet.Herod gazes with eyes of love at Salome, while Herodias watches her jealously. Johndenounces Vitellius as the curtain falls. ACT III SCENE l—Phanuels HousePhanuel is disclosed gazing at the city, which lies silent under a starry sky, andprophesying the fate which is to overwhelm it.
