The Shields Daily Gazette for 19 June 1905 reports:
"At North Shields Mary Ann Blades (19), Newcastle, was charged with sleeping out on a doorstep in Linskill Street early on Saturday. Defendant said that she was drunk and that was the reason she was sleeping out. Chief Constable Huish said that the defendant made her 22nd appearance. She was committed for 14 days".
The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette for 24 August 1904 reports:
"A Young woman named Mary Ann Blades was charged with stealing clothing. Carl Anderson, a seaman on board the Gothenburg steamer Lindholmen, now lying in the Hudson Dock, said the clothing belonged to his shipmates and himself, and was worth 6s 6d. The clothes were missed from the vessel at three o'clock this morning. The Lindholmen lay alongside the Quay. PC Freeman of the River Wear Watch deposed that shortly before midnight yesterday he met the prisoner on the Dock carrying the bundle. She told several stories and then admitted stealing the things. The Bench committed the accused, who had a bad character, to gaol for three months with hard labour".
