Saved A Trainload of Passengers. Mary Ach of Watts' Station, Ohio. Near her home, on the Portsmouth mouth branch of the B.&O. S.W. Railroad, she discovered a bridge of the road on fire. The afternoon express of the road was nearly due. She ran down the track and flagged the train in time to prevent a frightful plunge to death. Among the many passengers aboard was Superintendent Bunson, of the road. He has presented her name and facts to headquarters, and she is to be-liberally rewarded. The passengers made up a purse of $50 for her. One lady, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnston gave her a gold watch. At the same time she was saving life her nephew was caught in the machinery of her father's creamery and crushed to death.

Notes

[edit]

$50 in 1899 would be worth $1,522 in 2018.
