Summary[edit]
DescriptionMarisa Maza, RE-Xpedition I-II, Installation, Video, Screenprint,.jpg |
English: In her two-part piece, Marisa Maza continues her long-term analysis of (media)
representations of the body, sex and gender. The artist draws a parallel between the role of women scientists in a (pre)colonial context and today where the role of women as researchers and “discoverers” is nearly as socially marginalized as it was previously. In the video, Maza sets up a contrast between statements made by Lady Florence Baker (1845 – 1916) and Marloes Janson (1973 –) whose lives have taken each of them from Western Europe to East and West Africa. In addition, Maza presents a series of screenprints that refer to a different biography. In the story of Sayyida Salme, Princess of Zanzibar and Oman, aka Emily Ruete (1844 – 1924)1, the perspective is inverted with the focus turning to pre-colonial and colonial Germany and a woman’s life between different cultures, between exoticism and emancipation. |
