This postcard depicts a boxing match between two Marines in Veracruz, in 1914, during the United States occupation of Mexican Veracruz in the context of Banana Wars, Mexican Revolution, and the Border War. [Continues from past post] Carpender participated in the United States occupation of Veracruz in during the Mexican Revolution at the First Regiment of Bluejackets, formed from sailors. Their operations involved a landing on 21 April, the sailors remained under fire on the beachhead until early the next morning when they began their advance through Veracruz. they captured the town the following day. Carpender was then assigned to the Office of Naval Militia Affairs in Washington, D.C., where he would retire and die years later. In 1916, Carpender served at USS Davis until 1917, when he assumed command of the destroyer USS Fanning. During the action of 17 November 1917, he engaged the U-boat U-58, which was forced to the surface and compelled to surrender. For his part in the engagement, Carpender was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. With wwi coming to an end, he commanded USS Radford. The ship didn’t sail as much as Carpender would have liked, but escorted a convoy to Europe in October 1918.
