В портрете княгини Марии Клавдиевны Тенишевой Репин подчеркнул не светское, а общественное значение этой женщины, мецената и коллекционера, художницы и специалиста по эмалям. Он изобразил ее пишущей этюды на природе. На ней широкое темное платье, защищающее одежды от краски, в руках мольберт, лицо задумчиво и сосредоточенно. Спокойная поза, мягкость и гармоничность цветового решения, воздушность контуров способствуют созданию образа серьезного и значительного человека, симпатичной и миловидной женщины, преданной своему делу.
