Summary[edit]

Description

English: Map of the railway network in southern Portugal, if the propositions of the engineers Thomaz Rumball e B. Wattier have been accepted, in the first years of the portuguese railway planning, in the middle of the 19th Century.

The map shows the Rumball proposition for the Eastern Railway (Lisbon - Badajoz), that crossed the Tagus River near Carregado, followed the Sorraia valley near Benavente, Coruche and Mora, and passed near Estremoz and Elvas. There are also the projects of Wattier for the southern region: one railway from Coruche to Évora via Montemor-o-Novo, another to Algarve using the valley of the Sado River, with a branchline to Évora, and a third, that would connect all the others, from Castelo de Vide to the Sado railway, passing through Sousel, Évora and Beja.
