Description

On July 12 1863 , the advance of British troops across the Mangatawhiri stream signalled the start of the Waikato Campaign. The Kīngitanga or Māori King Movement had been established in 1858. The settler government saw it as an anti-land-selling league and an impediment to the progress of European settlement. The involvement of Kīngitanga warriors in fighting in Taranaki in 1860–61 fuelled fears that this was a separatist movement that challenged British sovereignty in New Zealand. In January 1863, Governor George Grey announced his intention to ‘dig around the Kīngitanga until it fell’.

The British Troops were led by General Duncan Cameron, a veteran from the Crimean War. The aim of the war was to drive out the Kingitanga movement which was seen as a threat to British authority. The British troops were successful in defeating the Kingitanga movement and large scale land confiscation by the Colonial government took place. The defeat and confiscations left the King Movement tribes with a legacy of poverty and bitterness that was partly assuaged in 1995 when the Government conceded that the 1863 invasion and confiscation was wrongful and apologised for its actions.

This map from 1866 is a Lands and Surveys map documenting the land confiscated from Maori and what the future designated use for that piece land was. Interestingly, there are 3 sections of land, one in the Karamu Region, one in the Tauranga region and one in Central Waikato which were designated as areas for a Crown University. None of these Universities were created. The key at the bottom of the map explains the identified use for each segment of land in the Waikato. The map was a published map but was annotated by Lands and Surveys with the colour coded use for various segments.
