Thebuilder of this Palazzo del Consiglio was probably Fra Giocondoof Verona, that mysterious Dominican friar who as antiquaryand humanist distinguished himself by publishing PlinysLetters and by making a collection of 2000 ancient inscriptions,which he gave to lyorenzo de Medici. Then, summoned byLouis XII to Paris, he built the Notre-Dame bridge over theSeine, and was the first to introduce the influence of the ItalianRenaissance into France. His Venetian work gained him thename of the second builder of Venice; he fortified Treviso; andat Rome he was one of the architects of the new St. Peters.* ^ One should perhaps add to the above specimens of non-Florentine Quattro-cento architecture certain remarkable palaces at Perrara (Schifanoja and thePal. de Diamanti, so called from the shape of its ¥ustica-h\oc\is), which areevidently imitated from what I have called the Florentine Etruscan style. 432 2£
