Summary

[edit]
Description

After overcoming imperial policy and the hostility of some officers, the first Māori Contingent left Wellington on 14 February 1915. As nzhistory.net.nz notes, "policy was initially against ‘native peoples’ fighting in a war between European powers. There were fears that they might turn on their colonial masters or cause embarrassment by expecting equal treatment with European soldiers."

Although the Māori Contingent were determined to see combat, these imperial concerns saw the Contingent posted to Malta, where they underwent further training and garrison duties (freeing up Pākehā soldiers for combat). However the severe casualty rate in Gallipoli forced a change in policy, and the Contingent landed at Anzac Cove on 3 July 1915. Despite further hostility and major restructuring, the Māori Contingent - eventually renamed the New Zealand (Māori) Pioneer Battalion - was an "outstanding unit" that earned the respect and admiration of its peers.

This photograph shows the sergeants of the Māori Contingent in Ghajn Tuffieha, Malta, just weeks before leaving for Gallipoli. It was either taken by, or belonged to, Captain William Ennis (later Commanding Officer of the Contingent). Archives New Zealand also holds nominal rolls, correspondence, and unit diaries for the Contingent, although many records were either lost or destroyed in the 1930s.

These are the sergeants of the First Māori Contingent, taken from the nominal roll in 'Te Hokowhitu a Tu' by Christopher Pugsley. If you can match any of these names to the photograph above, please leave a comment below.
