Ill addition to re-maiiufacturing from merchantable tim-ber, the problem of successfully utilizing- the waste materialfrom the mills and logging camps is very important. Thisopens up a large field for investigation and abundant oppor-tunity for new industries. Prof. Benson, in the article following,calls attention to the fact that only about 32 per cent, of thelumber as it stands in the forest is at present utilized in anymanner and suseests a number of uses to which this could beput by chemical processes. Other uses also have been mentionedalready in connection with furniture and boxes. This waste includes large quantities of short length lumber,narrow strips, slabs, edgings, knotty pieces and sawdust, muchof which could be utilized in the manufacture of various usefularticles requiring lengths of that sort and adapted to theutilization of cull lumber.
