It was neverthelesskept in tolerable repair for some years ; and, in 1673, when theDutch Captain Colve recaptured the city from the English, it wasrenewed with considerable additions ; at that period severalbuildings had been erected outside of the walls, which wereregarded as obstructions and were removed by order of the au-thorities. But it is a curious commentary on the march of eventsto read such entries in the records as the following: Jan Vinje,living on the Damen farm, at the present junction of William andPine streets, sues several of his neighbors for damages done bytheir school-boys running in his fields and among his peas ontheir waj to school in the city. 541 ings were begun along the southern line of the street. Thesewere of an humble character, few in number, and seem to havebeen mostly tap-rooms or beer-shops. Another consequence of the erection of the wall was thethrowing into market of the outhoeek of the Damen farm, beforespoken of; and as this was the first considerable plot of land whichwas divided into parcels and offered at public sale in this city, it isthought of sufficient historic interest, in connection with our localprogress,to give a more particular account of the details attendingthe sile than the circumstances would otherwise justify.
