The Shields Daily News for 9 May 1905 reports:
“THEFT FROM A SEAMAN’S BOARDING HOUSE AT NORTH SHIELDS.
At North Shields Police Court today Manolis Cammis, a Greek seaman, was charged with having stolen from a boarding house at Swan’s Quay, on the 8th inst., a pair of trousers and a vest, valued at £1 15s, the property of George George, a Greek seaman.
The prosecutor said that on the date named he left the house in order to look for a ship, and on returning for breakfast he missed a pair of trousers and a vest, which he had left in his room. He accompanied the boarding house keeper (Mr Nichols) to South Shields and upon going to the Shipping Office they saw the prisoner, who was wearing both the vest and the trousers, the latter being concealed by another pair. He accused him of the theft and he replied that he bought them at Baltimore. Mr Nichols corroborated this statement.
Inspector Thornton said he arrested the accused, who was still wearing the clothing, and charged him with the theft. He said he bought the clothes at Baltimore. In the pockets he found two studs and two keys which the prosecutor identified as his property. Formally charged the prisoner pleaded not guilty and said he bought the clothing from an Italian on board of a ship yesterday morning for 7s. There was another charge against him of having stolen 3s 11d from the same boarding house, the moneys of John Pappivannon, an engineer’s steward.
The evidence shewed that the accused and the prosecutor occupied the same room and the money was taken while the latter was asleep. Prisoner denied this charge also. The magistrates committed the accused to prison for one month with hard labour on the first charge and dismissed the second”.
