male fern, Dryopteris filix-mas, California, White Mountains, Cottonwood Basin, Granite Meadow, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 3019 m (9905 ft). Another outcrop species found near the Sphaeromeria and Jamesia posted earlier, this fern hides in the deepest, most sheltered south-facing granite crevices it can find in the subalpine of the White Mountains, where it seems to like the combination of reliable moisture, lack of competition, protection from the elements, and an hour or two of direct sun each day. This one was high up and took a bit of an exposed scramble to reach. The species is considered rare in California, the upper Cottonwood Basin of the White Mountains being one of a very few known sites in that state, where I first documented it in 1984. But otherwise it is widespread and common in the Boreal zone of the Northern Hemisphere. In North America habitat is increasingly scarce as it extends southward in the western mountain chains, and just barely south of the Canadian border in the eastern US. |
