Next to this photo, Uncle Elstner wrote: "Making rice cakes for the new year. (Mochi)" According to Wikipedia, "Mochi (Japanese: 餅) is a Japanese rice cake made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and molded into shape. In Japan it is traditionally made in a ceremony called mochitsuki." "While also eaten year-round, mochi is a traditional food for the Japanese New Year and is commonly sold and eaten during that time." "Mochi is also a prominent snack in Hawaii, Taiwan, Cambodia, and Thailand." "Mochitsuki is the traditional mochi-pounding ceremony in Japan. Polished glutinous rice is soaked overnight and cooked." "The cooked rice is pounded with wooden mallets (kine) in a traditional mortar (usu). Two people will alternate the work, one pounding and the other turning and wetting the mochi. They must keep a steady rhythm or they may accidentally injure one another with the heavy kine." "The sticky mass is then formed into various shapes (usually a sphere or cube)." "Though Mochitsuki is the traditional preparation method, mochi can also be cooked in the microwave." For more information about Mochi, go to:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mochi This photo is from an album my spouse's uncle Elstner Hilton compiled in Japan between 1914 and 1918. While Uncle Elstner was pretty good about annotating the photos that required an explanation of some sort, he did not date the pictures. So all we know is they date to between January, 1914 and December, 1918. |
