Summary[edit]

Description
English: A pirate vessel of Makassar prahu type, in Persian gulf, drawn by Pritchett. This boat is misidentified as Arab Pirate Boat in Folkard's The Sailing Boat (1901). Upon closer inspection this boat has Malay characteristics in it: It may be a padewakang of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The reason why this vessel is 8000 km away from its home is unknown. See [1] [2] [3]

Excerpt from the book:[4]

ARAB PIRATE BOATS.

Another and more ancient kind of craft of the class of armed pirate boats that formerly infested the Persian Gulf, is that shown by the subjoined illustration.

It will be observed that the type of the Arab Dhow may be traced in the form of its hull; and the rig savours of the Malayan form. The boat has a square transom, with raised deck astern; it has no rudder, but is steered by the primitive contrivance of two ponderous oars, one on each side of the transom stern.

The rig of this craft is, too, as ancient and curious as its type of hull : the main-sail being supported by a tripod mast similar to that of the Malays in the Celebes. Other details of the rig may be best explained by reference to the illustration.
