The general theme of the Federal exhibits at the Century of Progress Exposition was the portrayal of the contributions made by governmental agencies toward the advancement of science and the progress of civilization during the past 100 years. ... The first or pictorial part of the exhibit consists of nine oil paintings, 40 by 30 inches in size. ... The six remaining paintings, arranged chronologically, depict a few of the many activities undertaken "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men." The titles of these are: "Professor Henry Posts Daily Weather Map in the Smithsonian, 1858", "Major Powell Descends the Colorado River Through the Grand Canyon, 1869" ...
