De Nederlandse voetballer, Georginio Wijnaldum, met Surinaamse roots is momenteel in Suriname. Hij heeft onlangs met de profvoetbalclub Liverpool de Champions League gewonnen. Wijnaldum heeft tijdens zijn bezoek ook de indrukwekkende trofee meegenomen. De profvoetballer is door de minister van Sport- en Jeugdzaken, Lalinie Gopal, op de Johan Adolf Pengel Luchthaven ontvangen. Bij de aankomst heeft de minister hem warm welkom geheten. Directeur Sportzaken, Mitchell Kisoor, maakte ook deel uit van de delegatie voor ontvangst.

Een brassband heeft gezorgd voor een muzikale sfeer. Met de komst naar Suriname toont Wijnaldum zijn Surinaamse roots niet te zijn vergeten. Dat heeft hij ook reeds na de gewonnen finale wedstrijd bewezen door trots op het veld te poseren met de Surinaamse- en Nederlandse vlag. Ook in Suriname blijkt Wijnaldum veel fans te hebben. Op de luchthaven werd de voetballer omringd door razende fans die graag met hem op de foto wilden.

Georginio Wijnaldum is op 11 november 1990 in Rotterdam, Nederland geboren en heeft Surinaamse ouders. Al vanaf zijn jeugd heeft hij bewezen een top voetballer te willen zijn. Hij heeft in diverse topclubs gespeeld in Nederland en de rest van Europa. Tijdens zijn bezoek zal hij verder ook door de President van de Republiek Suriname Desiré Bouterse gehuldigd worden in het district Coronie.
