MHA (Mueller-Hinton Agar) and MacConkey Agar are two different types of agar plates commonly used in microbiology for various purposes.

| Description |
English: MHA (Mueller-Hinton Agar): Purpose- MHA is primarily used for antibiotic susceptibility testing through the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. It provides a consistent and standardized medium for testing the effectiveness of antibiotics against bacterial isolates.
Composition- MHA typically contains beef infusion, casein hydrolysate, and starch. It has a uniform consistency and pH, which are important for accurate susceptibility testing. MacConkey Agar: Purpose- MacConkey Agar is used for the selective and differential isolation of Gram-negative bacteria, particularly enteric bacteria like Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella. It is also used to differentiate lactose-fermenting bacteria from non-lactose fermenters. Composition- MacConkey Agar contains peptones, lactose, bile salts, and crystal violet. The pH indicator neutral red is added to differentiate lactose-fermenting colonies (pink/red) from non-lactose fermenters (colorless). |
