Summary

[edit]
"Wilhelmine Amalie, Prinzessin von Braunschweig-Lüneburg mit ihren Töchtern"
Artist

Johann Alexander Müller

Künstlervermerk: Joh. Alex. Müller. / pinxit / Wolfenbüttel 1717.
Title
"Wilhelmine Amalie, Prinzessin von Braunschweig-Lüneburg mit ihren Töchtern"
Description
English: So-called Portrait of Wilhelmine Amalia of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1673-1742) with her daughters Josefa and Amalia, but is probably a depiction of Princess Antoinette of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1696-1762) with two of her daughters.
  • Identification proposed by user Ecummenic (talk) based on the comparison with some portraits of Antoinette of Brunswick (see the first two images below), the lack of physical resemblance with Wilhelmine of Brunswick, and the presence of the ribbon of the Order of Gandersheim which is also observed in a portrait of Antoinette's daughter Therese of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, canoness at Gandersheim since 1750 (see third image below).
Deutsch: "Gruppenbild mit Wilhelmine Amalie als verwitwete Kaiserin mit ihren Töchtern Marie Josefa, Erzherzogin von Österreich und Marie Amalie, Erzherzogin von Österreich. Im Hintergrund 34 Porträts braunschweigischer Familienmitglieder. Gemälde von Johann Alexander Müller, signiert und datiert "Wolfenbüttel, 1717". Gerahmt, hinter Glas."
Date dated by the institution in 1717, but based on the sitter's clothing and hairstyle it can be dated to circa 1750
