Description

The Civil War monuments at Shiloh are the most poignant I know of. They are for the most part not pretending to heroism, but are elegies, often half-naked women mourning men's stupidity.*

Aristophanes's play reminds us that at least as long ago as 411 BCE women were trying to come up with a plan to keep men from destroying each other. I've always thought Lysistrata had a pretty good scheme for that, hitting them where it would hurt worse than bullets.

Stupid men. God damned stupid men.

(* The spin is sometime to the contrary, but it's pretty easy to see through to the artists' intentions.)
