Summary[edit]

Description

Reflecting the national outreach of healing and remembrance that are at the core of Washington DC's 9/11 Memorial Groves project, Washington State’s Lummi Indian Tribe is contributing a massive healing totem pole destined for the Kingman Island Grove.

Congressional Cemetery has the honor of hosting the Lummi Tribe’s Healing Totem Poles while the Kingman Island site is prepared. The structure includes:

two 13’ bears that are six feet in diameter and a 34’ arch across the top that will end in outward facing eagles. Truly an impressive piece of sculpture.

Jewell Praying Wolf James, the master carver, visited Congressional in February to discuss siting and logistics with board members and the Greenspaces for DC group that is managing the Grove project.

Jewell explained that the bear is an ancient symbol of strength and endurance and represents the women who perished on 9/11. The eagle is a symbol of courage and

vision and represents the men who perished that day. The Sun and Moon elements represent grandfather and grandmother, suggesting the intergenerational aspects of our nation and our families. The colors of the elements on the poles are red, white, black, and yellow, reflecting the races that compose the United States.
