The Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame who taught in Louisbourg. They lived in Louisbourg from 1737, were exiled in 1745 and returned in 1749 only to be displace by the war in 1758. They educated young girls and served as an example of devotion and sacrifice to the community.

The stabilized ruins representing the convent and was a place of pilgrimage.

In the background are the original museum and caretakers buildings. These buildings started the beginning of the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Park. The Louisbourg museum is closely associated with John Stewart McLennan, an early proponent of the reconstruction of the Fortress who was instrumental in the eventual commitment of federal government funds for its development.

The main reason I came to the fortress was to do the ruins walk for my book. The Ruins Walk at Fortress Louisbourg is a 2.3 kilometer (1.44mi) trail through the remains of the original 18th century town that have not been restored. There are interpretive panels along the trail to provide information on significant features. The views can be great and it is an opportunity to walk among what is a fascinating part of the site.
