Credit / Mention de source : Library and Archives Canada, C-125656 / Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, C-125656 Description / Descriptions : A businessman by trade, Louis-Christophe-Hilarion Fromenteau (1749-1816) entered the army as a commissary of stores and was captured by the American forces in 1777 after the British defeat at Saratoga, New York. Likely as recompense for four years of imprisonment, he was appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Gaspé from 1792 to 1795. After 1796, he continued a military career first as Quarter-Master for the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Volunteers, and from 1812 to 1814 as Pay-Master for the 4th Battalion, 8th Battalion and the 1st Battalion of Trois-Rivières / Homme d'affaires de profession, Louis-Christophe-Hilarion Fromenteau (1749-1816) s'engagea dans l'armée comme commissaire aux magasins et fut capturé par les forces américaines en 1777 après la défaite britannique à Saratoga (New York). Probablement pour compenser ses quatre années d'emprisonnement, il fut nommé juge de la Cour des plaids communs à Gaspé de 1792 à 1795. Après 1796, il poursuivit sa carrière militaire, d'abord comme quartier-maître du 1er Bataillon des Royal Canadian Volunteers, puis de 1812 à 1814 comme payeur pour le 4e Bataillon, le 8e Bataillon et le 1er Bataillon de Trois-Rivières. |
